Introduction
St.Andrew's is honoured to welcome the sealed relics of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux on the afternoon of Wednesday September 30th, 2009 for display and veneration until 10.30am October 1st (St Thérèse’s feast day).
This is a major diocesan event and is expected to attract crowds in their thousands. Since authorities need as accurate a prediction of numbers as possible an appeal is going out to anyone wishing to attend to advise us as soon as possible please by emailing us at st.theresa.visit@hotmail.co.uk.
The Tyneside visit is part of a national programme in which the casket will be taken to more than 20 places of worship in England and Wales, beginning at Portsmouth on September 16 and ending at Westminster Cathedral October 15.
Seeking to fulfil St Therese’s stated desire to work as a missionary, her relics have been on a pilgrim’s journey for the last 15 years. Before entering England, they visited The United States, Ireland, Lebanon, Iraq and more than 30 other countries. Newcastle is the most northerly point on the UK schedule and upon leaving the city, the casket will go to Darlington, York, Middlesbrough and Leeds.
